The Midas touch: how to create an unforgettable event experience

Step onto any exhibition floor and the first thing you notice is the sameness.

Rows of stands. Polite smiles. Branded pens. The faint hum of sales pitches.

It’s professional, yes. But memorable? Not often.

Now, imagine a stand where laughter cuts through the background noise. Where a crowd gathers, not because they’re being handed a leaflet, but because they’re competing, cheering and having fun. That’s the power of touch.

Games and other hands on experiences on exhibition stands aren’t just a novelty. They’re a way to transform a fleeting interaction into a lasting memory. They spark conversations, lower barriers and give people a reason to stay longer. In a space where attention is the most valuable currency, adding elements of touch to your stand is one of the smartest investments you can make.

Sometimes, you need to feel it to believe it

The power of touch

Play isn’t just for children. It’s hardwired into us.
From board games to pub quizzes, we’re drawn to competition, challenge and reward. At events and exhibitions, the human instinct to touch things becomes a powerful tool.
When visitors play a game, they’re not just passing the time. They’re engaging with your brand in a way that feels natural. A dartboard or a puzzle doesn’t demand attention. It earns it. The act of playing creates a shared moment, an ice-breaker that makes conversation flow more easily.
There’s also science at work. Games trigger dopamine, the brain’s reward chemical.
That little rush of satisfaction when you hit the target or crack the code makes the experience stick. Visitors don’t just remember the game. They remember the brand that gave them that feeling.
And here’s the crucial point… gamification isn’t about distraction. It’s about connection. It turns an exhibition stand from a static display into a living, breathing experience.

Touch in action

The best way to demonstrate touch’s impact is through real examples. Here are four projects we’ve delivered that show how play can be both fun and strategic.

At InstallerSHOW, Wavin’s foam darts game quickly became a magnet for visitors. Installers queued up to test their aim, with branded prizes adding an extra incentive. But the real win was the conversations that followed. While players waited their turn, Wavin’s team had the perfect opening to talk about their products and solutions.

Another Wavin highlight was a penalty shootout game. Visitors lined up to take their shot, cheered on by a referee character who added theatre and humour.

VitrA took a playful approach with a basketball game that used a toilet seat as the hoop. It was cheeky, unexpected and perfectly on-brand. The humour drew people in, but the cleverness of the concept ensured they remembered it long after leaving the hall.

And for Stiebel Eltron, we created a puzzle that encouraged visitors to explore the stand. To crack the code, they had to hunt for clues across different product zones. This wasn’t just a game. It was a guided tour disguised as fun. The result? Longer dwell time, deeper engagement and more meaningful conversations.

Across all four examples, the common thread is clear. Gamification isn’t a gimmick. It’s a structured way to make people interact with your brand, not just walk past it.

Designing the right game for your brand

Not every game suits every brand. The key is alignment.

If your audience is hands-on, like installers, engineers or builders, then physical skill games like darts, football or basketball resonate. They mirror the practical, competitive nature of the work.

For tech-focused audiences, digital puzzles, leaderboards or VR challenges can feel more relevant. They showcase innovation while still delivering that sense of achievement.

And for lifestyle or consumer brands, humour and light-heartedness can be powerful. A quirky twist, like VitrA’s toilet-seat hoop or a branded game of Whack-a-Mole, shows confidence and creativity.

Prizes matter, too. But they don’t have to be extravagant. Branded items that feel useful or fun work well. Often, the real prize is the experience itself, the story visitors take away and share.

The golden rule is that the game should never feel bolted on. It should feel like a natural extension of your brand.

Making touch work

Great ideas need solid execution. Here are some practical points to consider when incorporating touch elements into your exhibition stand:

Space

Make sure the game fits comfortably within your stand’s layout. Crowds are great, but bottlenecks aren’t.

Staffing

Games need hosts. A referee, scorekeeper or someone to cheer players on adds energy and keeps things moving.

Integration

The game should tie into your wider messaging. A football shootout is fun, but it’s even better when it links to a product feature or campaign theme.

Data capture

Games are a natural way to collect leads. A leaderboard, prize draw entry or digital registration can gather details without feeling intrusive.

Sustainability

Avoid throwaway gimmicks. Reusable builds and thoughtful prizes show responsibility as well as creativity.

Extending the impact

The beauty of touch elements is that they create moments people want to share. A photo of someone mid-penalty kick. A video of a dart hitting the bullseye. A selfie in front of the leaderboard. These are ready-made social posts.

So, encourage your visitors to share their scores or tag your brand. Offer small rewards for posting, or simply make the experience so fun that people want to show it off.

And don’t stop when the show ends. Use highlights in your post-event marketing. Put together a video reel showing who topped the leaderboard or the best shots from the show.

Gamification doesn’t just boost engagement on the day of the exhibition. It gives you content that keeps working for weeks, even months, afterwards.

Why touch is the future of exhibition stands

Events and exhibitions are no longer about who has the biggest stand or the glossiest brochure. They’re about who creates the most memorable experience

Touch helps turn visitors from passive observers into active participants. It makes them laugh, compete and connect. In doing so, it makes your brand unforgettable.

So, if you want your stand to be the one people talk about on the train home, the one they remember weeks later, it’s time to play. That’s what we do at Exhibit Interactive.

We design games and touch experiences that fill your stand with energy, laughter and stories people take back to work with them.

If you’re ready to swap polite nods for authentic engagement, let’s talk about how we can build a sensory experience on your stand that gets people playing, talking and remembering your brand long after the show doors close.
