Virtual & Augmented Reality for
Karl Storz

The Client

Karl Storz is a global manufacturer and distributor of endoscopes, medical instruments, and devices. Founded in 1945, it has forged a worldwide reputation for creativity, flexibility, innovation and expertise.

In recent years, Karl Storz has turned its focus to developing digital solutions, including documentation systems and comprehensive operating room concepts. As a system supplier, the company combines its expertise in endoscopy with software solutions to achieve integration in the operating room and support clinical process and resource management.

The Project

Ei was approached to create engagement tools using both Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technology, to help Karl Storz digitally demonstrate its OR1™ integrated operating room system.
OR1™ is an innovative equipment integration solution for medical operating rooms, which offers expandable systems that can be customised to the users’ needs, from a smart, space-saving model right the way up to a fully equipped premium version.

Access to a live operating theatre for training or promotion of a piece of equipment is extremely limited, expensive and comes with a host of logistics issues. Karl Storz required a tool to enable it to do this virtually, in either a training or sales environment or at an event.

The Solution

Using our CAD software skills, we created a detailed virtual environment and utilised existing Oculus and Apple platforms to help demonstrate the key aspects of OR1™. Extensive testing was required to create the final environment, which can show surgeons the advantages of using the system, and how a room could be configured for different operations.

The user sees a virtual panorama of the room with all the equipment in a spread-out position ready for surgery. They can choose between three procedure scenes and move through the configuration of each one. Their reality is enhanced because they can experience OR1™ in a way which extends the boundaries of its normal physical environment. It provides users with a memorable, high-impact experience, with a range of options so they can tailor what they see and the way they interact with it.

The Impact

The VR and AR environments have created an engaging focal point for Karl Storz at the events it has attended. It gives the company the ability to deliver an impressive, attractive, inspiring, and memorable presentation of the benefits of OR1™, using highly persuasive technology that is designed to provoke an emotional response from the user. The system is also extremely flexible in terms of when and where the presentation can take place, helping to reduce the costs associated with providing a physical demonstration of OR1™.

The beauty of using a digital platform is it can be adjusted or amended as procedures change or update, providing a future-proof solution.
