Electrical Safety First at the
Labour Party Conference
The Client
Electrical Safety First (ESF) is a campaigning charity that aims to reduce deaths and injuries caused by electricity in UK homes. It works closely with the Government, the electrical industry, manufacturers, retailers and consumer safety organisations to improve safety regulation and standards.
ESF runs media and digital campaigns to share advice and guidance with consumers to help them stay safe in their homes. It also conducts research and publishes in-depth reports on key electrical safety issues, providing policy and decision makers with evidence and recommendations for change.
The Project
Our Client Services Director, Chris, led this project.
We were tasked with creating an interactive exhibition space with sight and touch elements to help ESF raise awareness of its work to delegates at this year’s Labour Party Conference, which took place at ACC Liverpool.
The event saw Government Ministers, Labour MPs, councillors, activists and members, lobbyists and journalists from across the UK discuss official party business, take part in policy debates and attend a wide array of fringe events.
ESF was at the conference to champion the importance of stronger protections for homeowners and tenants, and to make the case for safer, smarter homes.
The Solution
We created a hands-on, interactive exhibition stand within ESF’s 3m x 3m space. The design was based on a typical living room in social or rented accommodation.
Dotted around the stand were 14 electrical hazards, including bare and faulty wiring, flickering lights, an overloaded adapter, a defective smoke detector and a water bottle near electrical appliances.
Visitors to the stand had to identify all 14 hazards in the quickest time and enter them all into a custom-made app on a tablet at the front of the stand. There were prizes for the fastest people on the leaderboard.
The stand also featured an LED screen playing video content about the charity, while leaflets, brochures and giveaways were dotted around the living space for delegates to take away.
The Impact
The interactive elements transformed ESF’s stand into one of the conference’s most talked-about attractions. Delegates queued throughout the event to test their safety knowledge, with the competitive element sparking genuine engagement.
Labour MPs Julie Minns, Taiwo Owatemi, Rupa Huq, Nick Smith and the Rt Hon Lord Kennedy of Southwark PC were among those who visited the stand.
The living room setting brought the concept to life, helping politicians and policymakers understand the real-world hazards faced by their constituents.
The stand’s popularity demonstrated how interactive experiences can elevate serious campaign messages to ensure they resonate and stick.
